Official Statistics and the Scottish Referendum

The 2014 referendum on Scottish independence is likely to prompt wide interest in comparisons of trends and patterns in social and economic conditions between Scotland and other parts of the UK. However, those comparisons are not necessarily straightforward to make or to interpret. Differences in legislation, in institutions, in public administration, in definitions and in the availability of data can all present statistical obstacles.

The UK Statistics Authority will seek to ensure that everyone with a serious interest in analysis and debate has access to as much help as possible to understand the scope for valid comparisons and the limitations of the available statistics.

Two events have been arranged to discuss these issues, on 2 October in Edinburgh and on 10 October in London, and further details can be found below and via the downloads on the right hand side of this page.
